Wavefield Ensemble | Situation 2
New York's newest new music collective, Wavefield, begins its existence through a residency at MANA Contemporary in Jersey City, culminating with its debut performance on Saturday November 3 at 7pm.
Inspired by the novel Rewrite by Bulgarian-Canadian author Temenuga Trifonova, Wavefield offers a concert of works on revisiting, reimagining and revising.
Aaron Helgeson's "Echoes of Always" is an overt reimagining of Baroque overtures and is being given its East Coast premiere. Anahita Abbasi's "Situation 2" (for which our first concert is named) is the second in her series of situational pieces, and is receiving its US premiere. Victoria Cheah's elegantly static "I Watched Her Smile Her Hand" receives its premiere concert performance.
Pierre Boulezs virtuosic and rarely heard Dérive 2 is the apotheosis of revision: the expansion of the ideas of his earlier Dérive 1, the piece slowly grew from a 5-minute-long birthday present to Elliot Carter in 1988 into Boulez's 45-minute magnum opus in 2006.
