Event
A Day with Haydn and Strauss
Sandy Eastman will be providing LLCC members with yet another opportunity to attend his pre-concert class and the symphony dress rehearsal for San Luis Obispo Symphony concert coming up in May. The San Luis Obispo Symphony offers as a gift to the community free dress rehearsals of its concerts during the afternoon (1pm-3pm) preceding the evening of the performance. Join Sandy and the San Luis Symphony for the dress rehearsal of "Classics Finale" at Classics in the Cohan featuring two pieces by different composers: Josheph Haydn / Symphony No. 92 - "The Oxford" Richard Strauss / Don Quixote, Op. 35 There are two soloists. One is Zull Bailey who is widely considered to be one of the premiere cellists in the world. His rare combination of celebrated artistry, technical wizardry as well as his engaging personality has secured his place as one of the most sought-after and active cellists today. the other soloist is violaist Andrew Duckles, who began his orchestral career with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and has made appearances as principal viola of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Long Beach Symphone and the New West Symphony. An enthusiastic chamber musician, Duckles appears regularly as a guest artist on a number of chamber music series throughout the US and Europe and shares the stage frequently with the Alexander String Quartet and the Capitol Ensemble. Andrew teaches viola and chamber music at Cal State Long Beach. This course will be in two parts. In the morning, there will be a lecture about the composers and about the pieces that are to be played in the rehearsal. In the afternoon, the class, as a group, attends the dress rehearsal of the performance. At the dress rehearsal SLO Symphony conductor Mike Nowak will speak as he conducts, giving background information, musicology, and note s on harmony. With Mike's broad knowledge and stage presence, the dress rehearsals are fairly comprehensive. Saturday, May 4, 2013. 9:00 - 11:00 am. for course, followed by symphony dress rehearsal 1:00 - 3:30 pm. The morning class will be at the home of one of our board members. The concert rehearsal will be in the Christopher Cohan Center in the PAC at Cal Poly.
