Soil Liquefaction Solutions: Stabilized Gravel Rafts to Reduce Liquefaction Effects

Garrett Fountain
TENSAR

ABSTRACT

The use of geogrids to create firm and unyielding working surfaces over soft soil subgrades is well established. However, geogrids can also enhance foundation performance as well as mitigate the effects of differential settlement and liquefiable soils under building foundations.  The installation of TriAx geogrid enhances the surcharge transfer, giving rise to an improved bearing capacity.  Mr. Fountains presentation will highlight recent Finite Element Analysis (FEA) validated by physical testing and case studies to demonstrate the benefits of TriAx geogrids.

Biography

Based in San Diego, California, Mr. Fountain is a Civil Engineering graduate from the University of Arizona with an emphasis in geotechnical engineering.  He has over 20 years of geotechnical engineering and construction experience.  As a Principal Engineer at one of Southern Californias leading geotechnical engineering firms, Garrett was involved in numerous public, private and design build projects.  Technically, Garrett is experienced with various geotechnical design software, FE modeling techniques and pavement design methods including AASHTO93, AASHTOWareME, FAARField, and PCASE.  As Tensars West Area Engineer, Garrett provides engineering support for a variety of Tensar technologies that include flexible and rigid pavements, crane pads, load transfer platforms and liquefaction/settlement mitigation under foundations. In addition to spearheading Tensars field validation program, Garrett is a liaison on numerous Tensar research and testing initiatives and has authored several published research documents.
