Monika Herzigs SHEROES
On Tuesday October 30th at 7:30 pm, pianist, composer and educator Monika Herzig brings the latest incarnation of her all-female jazz band, SHEROES, to Charlottesvilles Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church. Monikas vibrant personality and her commitment to empowering female jazz instrumentalists make her a perennial favorite. Previously called The Whole World in Her Hands, the group now is simply called SHEROES and will be playing compositions from their new self-titled CD.
In addition to her dazzling piano skills, Monika is a dedicated jazz educator at Indiana University. She is also a published author, having just completed a book on jazz legend Chick Corea titled Experiencing Chick Corea: A Listeners Companion. She also leads the electric jazz band Time Flies and other ensembles.
For their Charlottesville concert SHEROES will feature guitarist Leni Stern, trombonist Reut Regev, bassist Jennifer Vincent and drummer Karina Colis. As an ensemble of empowerment, SHEROES is a musical force, operating with deftness, invention, enthusiasm and ambition. Herzig does much of the writing and arranging, but Regev, Vincent, and Stern also contribute compositions, along with covers like House of the Rising Sun and Aint No Mountain High Enough.
Leni Stern wowed the large audience at her recent trio concert in Brooks Hall, which included her two Senegalese band mates playing Lenis African influenced jazz compositions. As a bandleader Leni has composed and released 21 albums, and toured the world inspiring the next generation of musicians to continue the cultural exchange that is central to her music.
Isreali born Reut Regev has played in Charlottesville twice before. She is a crowd favorite with her energetic, highly active trombone style. Bassist and cellist, Jennifer Vincent has been an active force on the jazz and Latin scenes in NYC for the past two decades. She plays, tours, and records with the likes of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, and many others. Karina Colis, is a percussionist and vocalist from Mexico, now based in New York. Her music is characterized by a diversity of rhythms and styles, combining the roots of various Latin/South American traditions with elements of Jazz, Fusion and Pop.
