The Nyack ART WALK is an annual juried event in which Nyack shops are turned into mini-art galleries with the artists in residence throughout the weekend. The 13th annual Nyack ART WALK took place in June 2018. This year, the event brought theater as an art medium into ART WALK with special characters from Hudson Valley history. As ARTWALK participants strolled through Nyack, they saw costumed characters who revealed fascinating glimpses into local history. The characters were portrayed by members of the acting troupe The Strange Bedfellows, directed and scripted by Diana Green.
Diana Green will discuss her process for creating this artistic presentation, which included the historical figures experiences. They spanned a century, between 1850 and 1950, during which time Rockland County was beginning to develop into the busy network of towns we know today, with thriving industries and beautiful living areas. Artists, travelers and even witches shared their thoughts on moments that left their mark on Rockland and the world beyond.
Each of these characters was drawn from true stories told in excellent history books that can be found in our local libraries and at the Historical Society of Rockland County. There is Naut Kannif, the Clarksville witch who was put on trial in West Nyack in 1816. This was the last witch trial in New York State -- and a good thing, too, since it was so late in our history! Theres Maxwell Anderson, local playwright and founder of the Rockland Center for the Arts. Jo Hudson told of the early days of the ice industry at Rockland Lake. If youve ever walked the trails at Harriman Park you might have seen the caves where Claudius Smith, the cowboy of the Ramapos, hid his treasures; he regaled guests with tales of his escapades.
All these and more were portrayed during ART WALK. This portion of the ART WALK festivities was made possible by an individual grant from Arts Westchester. Rockland Decentralization Individual Artist Grants are made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program (DEC), a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the NYS Legislature and administered by ArtsWestchester.
About the Company: The Children's Shakespeare Theatre (in its 20th season) is an independent organzation of children ranging in age from 8 - 18 who come from Rockland County, NY and surrounding areas. The company is made up of three divisions: the Knaves (age 8-14), the Rogues (age 14-18), and the Strange Bedfellows (age 19+). Under the aegis of Artistic Director Diana Green, each group produces multiple plays each season for presentation at various venues around Rockland County. The group's chief goal is to give young actors an opportunity to experience Shakespeare's words and deep understanding of the human experience, and to help them, through instruction in voice, movement, acting techniques and stage combat, to translate their experience to a broader audience of children and adults.
Membership in the group is open to all interested children within a reasonable commuting distance, and spaces are filled from a waiting list by audition as they become available.
*** As a courtesy to our guest speaker, please arrive early to avoid interruptions. The presentation will begin promptly at 7:15 pm. Latecomers with reservations may forfeit their seats. Walk-ins will be admitted only if space permits.
*** The Historical Society of Rockland County is a nonprofit educational institution and principal repository for original documents and artifacts relating to Rockland County. Its headquarters are a four-acre site featuring a history museum and the 1832 Jacob Blauvelt House in New City, New York.
