From the invention of the cotton gin, easy and affordable shipment of goods in cotton bags became the norm. But when bag production companies discovered that the bags were being re-used in a myriad of ways after shipping feed, flour, salt and sugar, they decided to change from the standard white cotton bags to something more appealing: printed calicoes. Join us as we follow the history of these wonderful cotton sacks from their inception through their hey-day and see the beauty and versatility of feedsacks.
Mea Clift is a traditional hand quilter and student of feedsacks, vintage textiles, and the history of quilting. In addition to collecting feedsacks and vintage quilts, she also collects and repairs vintage sewing machines and is a living historian of multiple time periods. You can follow her quilting and sewing adventures atfacebook.com/historybyhand.
Visiting the museum at this time does require the use of stairs.
