Music @ Engine: The Blacksmiths and Cara Domings play Beck's Song Reader
Toward the end of 2012, Beck released Song Reader, an album's worth of new music exclusively in sheet music form. Two acts from Massachusetts will be performing selections from Song Reader, as well as a few originals at Engine. In the wake of Modern Guilt and The Information, Beck's latest album comes in an almost-forgotten formtwenty songs existing only as individual pieces of sheet music, never before released or recorded. Complete with full-color, heyday-of-home-play-inspired art for each song and a lavishly produced hardcover carrying case, Song Reader is an experiment in what an album can be at the end of 2012an alternative that enlists the listener in the tone of every track, and that's as visually absorbing as a dozen gatefold LPs put together.
The Blacksmiths were formed in early 2013 specifically to play from Song Reader, but have continued on as a band writing original material. Cara is a 24-year-old pop singer songwriter from the small town of Merrimac, Massachusetts. She has been writing music since the third grade. She has written over forty original songs and is a self-taught solo and rhythm guitarist and a classically trained pianist. Cara also speaks Italian and lives and performs in Italy for part of the year.
