HartBeat Ensemble Presents: Riding The Turnpike
Riding the Turnpike is set in a strip club on the Connecticut Berlin Turnpike in which four women are involved in prostitution in different ways and for different reasons. The lines between who is trafficked, who is there of their own free will and who is there for survival, are blurred as we watch the women navigate their own disparate situation, each more complex than the next. The play looks at what makes certain women and girls targets and examines all that one person can and will do to survive and secure their needs. Riding the Turnpike was inspired by the book, The Berlin Turnpike: A True Story of Human Trafficking in America, written by Raymond Bechard.

The play is HartBeat's first at its new home theater, the Carriage House Theater at 360 Farmington Avenue, Hartford. The production runs April 24-May 18, 2013 with performances scheduled Wednesdays through Saturdays at 7:30pm. April 24 & 25 preview night tickets are $15 for the general public and $10 for students, seniors and Let*s Go Arts members. Opening Night for Riding the Turnpike is Friday, April 26, all tickets are $50 and include the performance and a post-show reception with drinks and light fare provided by Black Eyed Sally's. Tickets for April 26 - May 18 are $20 for the general public and $15 for students, seniors and Let*s Go Arts members. Due to the subject matter, Riding the Turnpike is intended for mature audiences only.

HartBeat Co-Artistic Directors Steven Raider-Ginsburg and Julia B. Rosenblatt say, "because our work is based on real woman and first hand interviews, the play will break through many of these mythologies and give audiences insight into what the sex trade really looks like in our current society and in our own backyard. We are thrilled to be producing Riding the Turnpike and believe that this richly imagined play is a true example of HartBeat's commitment to work that defies boundaries and uses the tools of theater to tell the untold stories of our community"

HartBeat ensemble members Cindy Martinez and Debra Walsh are lead playwrights, Co-Artistic Director Steven Raider-Ginsburg will direct, and Co-Artistic Director Julia B. Rosenblatt will act as the dramaturg. The five member cast will feature Herbert Newsome* (New York, NY), Bryan Swormstedt (New York, NY), Michelle Mount (Somerville, MA), Caitlin McInerney (New York, NY), Cindy Martinez (Hartford, CT), Taneisha Duggan* (New York, NY).  *Members of Actors Equity
