An Italian Straw Hat
Marin School of the Arts premiers the perennial raucous farce "An Italian Straw Hat", directed by Rodney Franz, opening April 19th. Adapted from a 1928 French silent film, the show follows a young groom on his wedding day who finds himself in a series of increasingly ridiculous misadventures as he scours Paris to replace a hat of immeasurable importance. A fast-paced folly, filled with a zany cast of grandiose aristocrats and oblivious bumpkins, the show exhibits both physical and situational comedy, turn of the century costumes, a unique set design, and even a few "burst into song" moments. "An Italian Straw Hat" was originally written as a play in the 1800's, adapted into a silent film, and re-imagined for the stage in 1955. Through its many incarnations, the timeless classic has remained fresh and witty with its high-energy pace and cringe-worthy stock characters. Its themes of deception, the absurdities brought about by wealth, and the goofy contrast of class comparisons make it especially relevant in our era of social divisions. Director Rodney Franz comments, "Many of the jokes and situations remain recognizable, so it really retains its charm and vitality". The farcical aspect of the show has given the actors the opportunity to craft wacky characters and make fun physical choices. Senior Ani Mack enthuses, "We really use our physicality to create the punch lines, so we've all learned a lot about physical comedy through this show." Lara Garay, another senior, adds, "The cast is really having a great time onstage, and it shines through! We bounce off each other, and that's where this play really comes to life." An Italian Straw Hat opens at 7 p.m. Friday, April 19th, in the Performing Arts Center at the Marin School of the Arts, 625 Arthur St., Novato. Shows continue at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, April 20, 26, and 27, with 2 p.m. matinees Sunday, April 21 and 28. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door, but performances often sell out, so it is suggested that tickets be purchased online at www.brownpapertickets.com or by calling (800) 838-3006. Admission is $8 for students and seniors, $20 reserved, or $15 general seating.
