About The Living Arts Playback Theatre Ensemble
The Living Arts Playback Theatre Ensemble is a troupe of improvisational actors and musicians who play back personal stories shared by audience members in ways that both honor and illuminate the original experience. The ensemble produces public performances, workshops and events for personal and professional growth and social change in the Bay Area. Created in 1986 under the direction of psychotherapist and drama therapist Armand Volkas, The Living Arts Playback Theatre Ensemble, in collaboration with The Healing the Wounds of History Project, has received international acclaim for its work in bringing groups in conflict together such as Germans and Jews; Palestinians and Israelis; Japanese, Chinese and Koreans on their legacy of WWII and Armenians and Turks. At the heart of its work is a profound respect for the power of personal story to build bridges between people and cultures. Visit http://livingartsplayback.org/ to learn more.
About Positively Shameless Now
In 2015, seventeen of us from Bangalore came together in two groups to use drama to work through the traumatic residues of the sexual abuse that we had experienced as children. The project was convened and facilitated by Maitri Gopalakrishna as part of her doctoral work. One of the outcomes of this rigorous project was a play called Positively Shameless where participants extended their own personal therapeutic journeys to create a performance that is meaningful to a larger audience.
Positively Shameless, premiered in 2016 and was collaboratively created by Kavya Bose, Maitri Gopalakrishna, Sathyam A.P., Shabari Rao, Sharanya Iyer, Shilpa Waghmare, and Vijji Chari. Over the year, it was successfully performed in three cities in India to critical and social acclaim. Positively Shameless Now is a new interpretation of the original piece by a subset of the group.
Directed by: Shabari Rao. Performed by: Kavya Bose, Maitri Gopalakrishna, Shilpa Waghmare and Vijji Chari
