STORYTELLING FOR CHANGE
STORYTELLING FOR CHANGE is a long-awaited encore to the November 2017 sold-out HOLD THIS STONE. Experience again the original poetry, dialogue and performance art of Nikiko Masumoto and Brynn Saito, fourth generation Japanese Americans, now joined by Storytelling For Change Fellows, who will share their personal, truth-telling experiences reminding us of the resilience of the human spirit.
Much of their content addresses very mature, intense themes and topics that truth-telling always require. This is shared with you, our audience, to encourage a compassionate listening spirit, so each of you may personally walk with our storytelling fellows. Their shared stories are narratives of power that shape our lives and communities, inspire action, bring nuance to memory and history and help us envision a future world of hope and understanding. These personal, heart-moving accounts inspire and touch on themes of civil injustice, civil liberties and the enduring power of humanity.
We are also reminded of the plight of Japanese Americans incarcerated during WWII and other oppressed peoples, who's personal stories celebrate the power of the human spirit and remind us of their hope for the generations that will follow them. Our storytelling fellows will be joined by storytelling headliners; Marisol Baca, Fresno City College poet and educator, poet laureate, Lee Herrick, noted Valley author and peach farmer, Mas Masumoto, and others to be announced.
Nikiko Masumoto is a writer, storyteller and performance artist whose writing and performing have surged from the root of memory and Japanese American experiences. Brynn Saito is a published poet who recently joined the faculty at California State University Fresno.
YMP's STORYTELLING FOR CHANGE Fellowship trains new and experienced writers, artists, organizers, educators and local community members in the power of crafting and telling detailed, heart-moving and inspiring personal stories that touch upon themes of civil injustice and civil liberties. Stories have power. The narratives we write and tell ourselves shape our lives and communities; they inspire action, bring nuance to memory and history, and help us see a future world.
