Hour 'Anemone Red' Record Release
HOUR (RECORD RELEASE) The six-piece instrumental band introduces 'Anemone Red,' the follow-up to February's 'Tiny Houses.' Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mike Cormier is accompanied by Abi Reimold on guitar, Jason Calhoun playing synth and violin, Peter Gill on percussion, Evangeline Krajewski on synth and Matt Fox on Viola. Hour delicately interlaces atmospheric ambience with thoughtful melodies that travel in and out of contemplative tension.
'Anemone Red' alludes to the Greek myth of Aphrodite and Adonis, a god who falls in love with a man who is killed while hunting boar. Aphrodites tears mix with Adonis's blood giving rise to the anemone flower, which across cultures symbolizes forsaken love, illness, or the death of a loved one. 'Anemone Red' narrates loss of memory, doubt, infidelity and death within a relationship. These songs are the colors of those experiences.
WENDY EISENBURG (Boston) Circles, angles, arcs, lines, intersections: Wendy Eisenberg is an explorer, inventor, author, observer, reporter, and much more. The improvising guitarist, banjo-player, vocalist and songwriter has written for and performed in numerous projects, including the critically acclaimed experimental band, Birthing Hips, described by NPR as brainy, noisy punk based in sonic adventure, technical mastery, and rejection of the status quo." Her work as an improviser has led to collaborations with Ted Reichman, Joe Morris, Weasel Walter, Damon Smith, John Zorn, Matt Mitchell and Zach Rowden, among many others.
Wendy's debut solo guitar record as an improviser will come out on VDSQ Records in 2018. Her singing and songwriting is showcased on 'Time Machine,' released on HEC Tapes in April 2017 and re-released as vinyl on FEEDING TUBE RECORDS. She also has a trio album with Trevor Dunn and Ches Smith on John Tzadik Label label, set for release this October.
GREG JAMIE (Portland, ME) The Maine-based singer, songwriter and guitarist combines the textural with the tuneful on his new album, 'Crazy Time.' There are echoes of the dark, eerie qualities of Jamies previous work (with his bands O'Death and Blood Warrior), but his solo work inhabits a sonic space all its own. Traditional folk melodies contrast cold, synthetic textures, generating an unsettling tension between intimacy and mystery. The atmosphere evokes both the weight of cold, New England winters and the ethereality of a sci-fi dreamscape. Lyrical themes confront notions of disappointment, inevitability, mental illness and adventure. Elements of the uncanny and playful are embraced in order to avoid predictable patterns and dismantle preconceptions of loner-folk. In his first official solo effort, Greg Jamie has crafted a singular work of disorienting beauty.
ABI REIMOLD Philadelphia-based singer and songwriter picked up a ukulele before heading out on a month-long tour this summer. The small and portable instrument was convenient to play at rest stops and a productive way to spend downtime on the road. Reimold has paired ukulele with their pedal board and amplifier introducing new compositions, rediscovering familiar ones and experimenting in improvisational ambiance.
