TPaRbor Clean-Up Day
The Mission Reach Ecosystem Restoration and Recreation Project has restored an eight-mile stretch of the San Antonio River into a quality natural riparian woodland ecosystem. In 2014, the San Antonio River Authority gave Texas Public Radio the opportunity to adopt a 3.4-acre stretch of natural area on the southeast corner of the Theo Avenue bridge, which we call the TPaRbor.
TPR is calling for volunteers on Saturday October 27th, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. to assist in the clean-up of the area.
Volunteers will rotate every 30 minutes on the following tasks:
1. Hand weed removal and collecting trash/brush from site a. Pulling Guineagrass, Buffelgrass, and Johnsongrass b. Pull away weeds that compete with trees and mulch a ring around each tree c. Trash and pulled grassy weeds placed in trash bags to be hauled off
2. Removal of aggressive small woody species (ragweed, hackberry, huisache, anaqua, ligustrum, and chinaberry) Brush to be piled up in designated, open, and easily accessible locations for chipping later a. Lopping and hand-sawing down trees under existing tree canopy and undesirable species b. All trees to be removed will be pre-marked with orange paint by WPO Staff, SARA Staff and select volunteers will apply herbicide to cut stumps.
The work day will result in expanded and improved habitat conditions and connections to the San Antonio River ecosystem.
Because of space limitations, we must limit this volunteer workday - no groups or troops, please. Youth volunteers ages 16-18 may sign up with their parent or guardian also volunteering.
Free parking will be available at Concepcion Park where registration will begin at 8:15 a.m.
