Writing as Body Work
How do major physical experiences physical experiences that are exhilarating, traumatic, chronic, painful, or pleasurable shape the language of your thoughts? How can you have a more embodied, sensory relationship to writing a process that sometimes makes us feel trapped in a cerebral box? How do you look in your minds eye and how does that form the story of your everyday perceptions? And how do those perceptions shape what you write and how? How can we create new forms in our writing (and other art practices), as well as in our everyday life, by bringing our body into the process and, reflexively, letting the process of creating enliven our bodies? In this group experiment, lead by Amber DiPietra, well feel our way through these questions by reading poems and passages from fiction, essay, and memoir. Well also do some guided meditation, breathwork, and simple exercises taken from healing arts modalities like massage, yoga, and contact improv dance. Bring a yoga mat or a beach blanket (depending on preference) and wear comfy clothes for moving around.

About the Instructor:
Amber DiPietra is a poet and performance artist, writing-for-wellness teacher, intimacy coach, and a Somatic (body acceptance/awareness -focused) Sex Educator through the Institute of Advanced Studies of Human Sexuality in California.  Waveform, her poetry collaboration with Denise Leto, was published in 2011 by Kenning Editions. Other writing appears in anthologies like Beauty Is a Verb: The New Poetry of Disability; The Force of Whats Possible: Writers on Accessibility and the Avant-Garde (2015) and several literary journals. Amber has lead writing workshops in nursing homes, vocational centers for the blind, juvenile detention centers and more. She creates participatory, body-based performances inquiries in places like the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the woodhull Sexual freedom Summit in Washington DC, and at universities in Tucson, Boulder, and Ann Arbor.  Here in St. Pete, Amber has created the body poetik, a project that helps people with marginalized bodies express their sensuality authentically.
