Navigating the Dorn Pyramid -- Joe Caretonuti & Robert Sachs
A prominent landmark for over a century, the Dorn Memorial Pyramid in a local cemetery that is dedicated to a mother and child and possibly husband and father - has intrigued generations of residents and sight-seekers. Myths, legends, and questions have accompanied the unique and - until recently - non-completed structure.
Recently the tomb was finally sealed amid a ceremony that referenced the past and promoted the idea that by preserving the purpose of the memorial it can be more than an elaborate headstone; rather a testament to love and hope.
You will learn who Frederick A. Dorn and his wife Cora Russell were. Remembered today only in death, each deserves a remembrance of their life. Additionally, you will learn why the elaborate structure was left unfinished until now? You'll be interested too to find our who actually built the well-engineered monument.
Well review the legacy of the Dorn and Russell families. Additionally, you will gain some insights into the efforts involved in finally sealing the pyramid and see footage of the final placement of the granite blocks and sealing ceremony. All this will be shown in the historic Masonic Lodge where Frederick A. Dorn served the fraternity.
The City of San Luis Obispo historian, Joseph A. Carotenuti continues to research and write about local history published monthly in Journal Plus magazine. A frequent guest on Dave Congaltons Home Town Radio, his webpage (www.joefromslo.com) provides an extensive history of San Luis Obispo and many of its earliest pioneers.
Robert Sachs, Master of King Davids Lodge, was responsible for the extensive preparation for the final sealing of the pyramid.
