Wooden Automata Workshop
Just how does that model move?
If you've stared at the windows in Whirligig Toys in Brighton and loved turning the handles of their wooden models, come and learn more.
Timberkits are experts in making wooden automata - models that use clever movement devices to make people laugh whilst drawing on the fascinating world of engineering.
Sarah Reast, the principle designer from Timberkits, will be leading a two really practical workshop for children aged 8-12.
The first workshop (12pm - 2.30pm) is exploring the world of LINKAGES - the connecting pieces that make the models move in their unique ways.
The second workshop (3.30pm - 6.00pm) explores the world of CAMS - the wheels that make everything work.
Using their latest product, children will investigate different movement techniques, learn how to construct a simple machine and then design their own model and most importantly, make it work.
This is a great opportunity to see how a real designer works - a hands-on session where everyone will leave with a working wooden model that they have created. There will also be a competition for the most ingenious design where the winner will take home a Timberkit model to make for themselves.
The price of the event includes all the materials to use within the session and you will also take home another kit so that you can continue to explore the ideas.
The event is being run in association with Whirligig Toys, Brighton's creative toyshop.
Parents are requested to attend the event and are welcome to get involved with the children, if they will let you!
