ESCAPE CD RELEASE CONCERT
ESCAPE CD Release Concert
Solo Cello ~ Sophie Webber

"In Webber's case its as if she were playing in an intimate setting, perhaps for someone special, in which every note has meaning rather as a look or a touch does; the resulting conversations she has with the music are endlessly absorbing... Her subjective narrative suggests the freedom with which Pablo Casals brought the music back to life a century ago."
~Laurence Vittes |  GRAMOPHONE JUNE 2018 ESCAPE CD REVIEW

"an exceptional and creative musician"
~Maureen Buja |  INTERLUDE Classical Music Magazine

Following performances in San Diego, London (UK) and Oxford (UK), this concert is part of an ongoing CD Release tour to celebrate the 2018 release of Sophie's debut album, "Escape: Bach's Six Suites for Solo Cello." The evening concert will explore the diversity of the cello as a solo instrument, as well as Bach's long lasting influence on modern composers, with a program to include Bach's beloved Suite No.1 in G Major, Cassado's defiant Spanish Suite, and Britten's haunting and stirring first Suite.

She has been the recipient of many awards for her playing, including the Indianapolis Matinee Musicale Graduate Strings Prize, Zumaia International Chamber Music Festival First and Public Prize, Indiana University's Heinitz Award, Finalist for Oxfordshire Young Musician of the Year, and most recently two Global Music Awards.

Sophie has been faculty at Lake Forest College (Illinois), Southeast Missouri State University, Oxford Cello School (UK), Trinity College of Music Junior Department (UK), and the Jacobs School of Music Summer Clinic (Indiana). She is also a keen music theorist, and more recently, composer, and held a position as Music Theory Instructor at Indiana University for four years.

In 2009, she founded Fused Muse Ensemble, an Illinois nonprofit organization with a mission to amplify voices too often left unheard through music and mixed media. In January 2018, Dr. Webber released "Escape," her debut double album of the six Bach Suites for Solo Cello. She is currently working on a complimentary recording project of the Suites where choral arrangements (sung by St. Pauls Cathedrals San Diego choristers) are seamlessly incorporated into the the fabric and flow of each movement.
