SADC Winter Salon 2018
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center's Quarterly Salon series brings together seven local choreographers for a curated night of dance. With two performances in one night, audiences have an opportunity to connect and witness the diversity of modern and contemporary dance artists in the Bay Area. Two performances in one day! 6pm & 8pm
Featuring: Jessi Barber Bellwether Dance Project KJ Dahlaw Roxanne Gray Kristin Damrow & Company Michael D. Lee Chingchi Yu
JESSI BARBER performs "Cross-Hatch", a solo of threads and breakages.
BELLWETHER DANCE PROJECTS "Let Slip the Witches" explores the archetype of the magical woman as a feminist source of power, preservation, support and resistance. Therein lies something about sisterhood and a return to the elemental, to the natural, to the feminine; therein lies something about cunning, intuition, ritual and revolt. The completed, full-length work will premiere in their inaugural home season April 5-6, 2019 at ODC Theater.
KJ DAHLAW's "Under the Fury" is a (singular) queer underworld journey. With an echo of the mythological tale Orfeo resonating in the body, this work descends into the shadows of queer becoming.
KRISTIN DAMROW & CO show an excerpt of their upcoming show "Impact", featuring soloist Shareen DeRyan inhabiting a dystopian world inspired by the Brutalist movement in architecture, with its emphasis on massive exposed concrete construction, and a wistfulness for the anti-bourgeois spirit of an earlier era. "Impact" premieres at YBCA in January 2019.
ROXANNE GRAY presents "Pair", an exploration of courtship rituals, and the art of finding a mate in the Animal Kingdom--highlighting biological behavior, gender roles, and gender fluidity in nature.
MICHAEL D LEE presents "Last Meditation", working with the prompt of mummification to examine how as humans we prepare ourselves and others for the last moments of our lives.
CHINGCHI YUS "Veil of Water" immerses the audience in an underwater world where the characters' paths converge, then drift away. This surreal duet is a quirky, nostalgic dance about finding one's own path within the realization that every moment of life is precious.
