Central City Chorus, directed by Phillip Cheah, closes its 38th season with two iconic British choral works of the 20th century.
Britten's festival cantata, based on the poem "Jubilate Agno" by Christopher Smart, was commissioned by the great patron of the arts, Reverend Walter Hussey, whose other famous commissions include Finzi's "Lo the full, final, sacrifice" and Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms" and written to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the consecration of St. Matthews Church, Northampton. The text is a celebration of the creator God found in all things.
Rutter's haunting work draws its inspiration from settings by Fauré, Howells, and Britten, both in its quiet poignancy and in the unique assembly of text from the Latin Requiem Mass, Biblical passages, plainchant, and the 1662 Book of Common Prayer Burial Service.
