Central City Chorus presents "The Tudors"
Central City Chorus, directed by Phillip Cheah, continues its 38th season with The Tudors, a program of choral music from the English Reformation featuring the "Mass for Four Voices" by William Byrd and other works by Thomas Tallis, Thomas Tomkins, Robert Parsons, and John Taverner.
The turbulent period of religious change in England that was initiated by Henry VIII with his break from Rome in the 1530s and continued in very different ways by his heirs Edward VI and Elizabeth I presented composers working in the church with the challenge of having to adapt to rapidly changing musical requirements. William Byrds "Mass for Four Voices" forms the backbone of this program which explores the political and theological tensions between the newly created Church of England and the recusant Catholics through the music of the composers in the Chapel Royal.
