Live at Studio5: LARRY SCHANKER AND SILENT MOVIES
Larry Schanker, piano
When we decided to install a projection system at Studio5, one of the first things that occurred to me was to present an evening of silent films with live musical accompaniment. The one person I thought of to accompany those films was my good friend, Larry Schanker. Larry and I became friends decades ago as NU music students, and he served as an important model for me when I began writing music for theater. This Saturday, for one night only, we are presenting "The General" by Buster Keaton, along with a second, surprise short film short, all accompanied by Larry at the piano. Orson Welles called "The General", "The greatest comedy ever made, the greatest Civil War film ever made, and perhaps the greatest film ever made." Join us for a spectacular one-of-a-kind event!
To get you acquainted, here'a brief bio for Larry:
"Larry Schanker has been writing music for theatre, film, dance, and the concert hall for almost 35 years. The Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra commissioned his Fantasia for Drumline and Orchestra which featured the Benton Harbor High School Drumline and the Benton Harbor Boys and Girls Club Drumline. Previously, the SMSO commissioned his Concerto for Jazz Piano, which premiered in 2011 with Larry at the piano. His theatrical credits include a great deal of work at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, and run the gamut from Shakespeare to Chekhov. Larry has also worked in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York with The Second City. He is an avid Silent Film Accompanist, having performed at the Sounds of Silents Film Festival in Three Oaks, MI, the Bartelow Center in South Bend, IN, and the Indiana University Cinema in Bloomington, IN. The University of Notre Dame commissioned his original score, written for piano and harp, for the silent film version of Peter Pan. Dr. Schanker holds a Bachelors and Masters Degree from Northwestern and a PhD in Music Composition from The University of Chicago."
Larry is a delightful performer, an unparalleled musical talent, and he happens to be about the nicest person on the planet. We cannot wait to welcome Larry to our stage for this special evening. SR
