SAMO© x Bohemian Art Gallery Opening 9/24
As most of you are aware, 57 Great Jones was the live-in studio of the iconic Jean-Michel Basquiat until his passing in 1988. The building is landmarked by New York City, as noted by the plaque on the wall outside, and Bohemian is tasked with looking after this historically important space.
Before Basquiat became the artist we all know him as, he was in a graffiti team called SAMO©. Their powerful political and social satire is in a definitive black, white and red font that still makes appearances around the city to this day. Al Diaz, the other half of SAMO©, is still actively creating thought-provoking art for the world to be inspired by.
In August, on Basquiat's 30th death anniversary, Al surprised us with the special gift of adorning the black shutters of 57 Great Jones with Basquiat's silhouette and a SAMO© phrase: "I didn't sign up to be used as a face 4 selling brand named crap!"
With that as a catalyst, we are so proud and happy to announce that we are hosting a gallery for Al Diaz in the space in front of Bohemian! The Same Old Gallery will be a one-time-only exhibit of Al's art, which he is creating specially for this occasion. The daily hours will be Tuesday through Sunday from 2pm to 7pm, officially opening on Sept. 26th and closing on Oct. 20th.
On Monday, Sept. 24th, we will be hosting a Bohemian VIP-exclusive viewing with some beverages. Al Diaz will be present to show you around and meet you!
