Workshop with Ian Coury, mandolin, at the Berkeley Festival of Choro 2018
Join us for this workshop in Brazilian choro styles, and bring your instruments! Ian will be accompanied by Nando Duarte, 7-string Brazilian guitar, and Brian Rice on pandeiro. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the style, rhythm, harmony and traditions of choro. Newcomers welcome!
The mandolinist Ian Coury was born in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. At eight he began the study of mandolin. The musical genre that he chose is Choro and his main influences are Jacob do Bandolim, Hamilton de Hollanda and Armandinho Macedo. Ian currently studies music theory and mandolin at the Escola de Música de Brasilia and teaches private lessons in harmony and singing.
At the age of 14, he proves that talent is of no age, since he is recognized by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Arts, History and Literature with Certificate of Cultural Artistic Merit and Musical Highlight and in his curriculum he has participated in the Global Strings Intensive Course (2015) and Summer Five Week (2016), conducted by Berklee College of Music, Boston / USA.
In his musical career as a soloist, Ian performed three great concerts at the renowned Clube do Choro in Brasília, a public and critical success. He has played with internationally recognized musicians like Paquito de D'Rivera, Cláudio Roditi, Hamilton de Holanda and Armandinho Macêdo, among others.
