Tuesdays in the Newsroom: Sea Turtles and the Threats They Face
Among those attracted seasonally to the warm waters around Cape Cod and Marthas Vineyard are several species of sea turtles. These range from the small, critically endangered Kemps Ridley to the impressive Leatherback, which can weigh up to 1,500 pounds. But sea turtles are vulnerable to a range of marine hazards, including boat strikes, fishing gear entanglements and ingestion of plastics. As the weather turns cooler, Kemps Ridley turtles in particular are in danger of being stunned by the cold water and stranded on beaches.
In the first Tuesdays in the Newsroom event of the off-season, marine biologist Karen Dourdeville will talk about the types of sea turtles found in our midst and what is being done to protect them. Ms. Dourdeville is a research associate with the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary of Mass Audubon, which is working to raise awareness of the threats faced by sea turtles and, assisted by a corps of volunteers, to rescue those in trouble.
Tuesdays in the Newsroom is a monthly discussion series produced by the Vineyard Gazette and held in the off-season for people who want more engagement with the news. Events are free to subscribers of the Gazette; nonsubscribers pay $10 at the door. Admission includes refreshments. Space is limited, so advance registration is required.
