COTE Tour - UCI Engineering Hall
This event is a building tour of Engineering Hall at UC Irvine, completed in 2009 and certified LEED Platinum. The building houses the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences departments within the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at UCI. The building was delivered via Design-Build, with Hensel Phelps, General Contractor and Carrier Johnson, Architect. Bridging documents were developed by HOK. The building is 5-story, cast-in-place concrete construction, over 121,000 GSF. The event will focus on design-build methodology, sustainable design and concrete construction.
Learning Objectives:
1.Develop an understanding of Design-Build competitions. 2.Provide examples of the use of cast-in-place concrete building systems. 3.Provide an example of a sustainable laboratory building. 4.Demonstrate the building's role as one element in the larger University campus.

Presenter Bio:
Philip Pipal is an architect with over 30 years of experience, 25 as a licensed architect in California. Mr. Pipal's specific expertise is in the creation of laboratory and research environments for both private sector and institutional research organizations. Since joining Carrier Johnson in 2001, Mr. Pipal has been focused on the academic research and teaching laboratory building type, leading Carrier Johnson's efforts at the University of California, Irvine. Specific projects at UCI include the Natural Sciences Unit 2, a 146,000 square foot research building, Engineering Hall, a 121,700 square foot laboratory and classroom facility, and the Clinical Laboratory Building at the UCI Medical Center campus in Orange, CA (60,000 square feet). He has also championed many of the company's Design-Build projects, working with several major Southern California construction companies. Mr. Pipal is LEED accredited. He received his Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Architecture from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
