A Festival of Short Plays by Contemporary American Playwrights
This is TASNs first far-ranging play festival - produced and presented by our Weekend Writers Workshop. In response to our call for submissions, we received 317 scripts from 36 states, five Canadian provinces, and five other countries. After five rounds of blind readings, the list was trimmed down to 24 semi-finalists. All 24 plays were given a cold read in front of our panel of 12 judges. By July, we had chosen our eight short plays to be presented this fall at our black box theater. The featured playwrights are from California, Maryland, Massachusetts, and New York. Each of these playwrights has an impressive résumé and each has earned artistic distinction either with awards, production credits, and/or being featured in distinguished publications.
Eight TASN directors stepped up to mount the plays. We held open auditions for actors and met or were reacquainted with 29 wonderfully talented actors. We are excited to be presenting these well-crafted plays as they represent points of view and sensitivities at many levels of the human experience. According to Executive Director, Marc Clopton, "This is a great opportunity to match up our local team with writers from across the country to present a truly remarkable festival of plays." The themes run from a jarring and hilarious send up of Tennessee Williams "Glass Menagerie," to a compelling conversation about violence and recovery, and into the uncharted emotional territory of adoption - just to highlight a few.
