Jennifer Knapp and Margaret Becker present "The Hymns of Christmas"
Singer-songwriters Jennifer Knapp and Margaret Becker are both longtime friends and mutually inspired by each others art -- and this Christmas season, they want to share that artistry and extend that friendship to others. The pair is celebrating the holiday and theyre inviting you to come celebrate with them.
The two multi-award-winning, top-selling artists met in 1998 shortly after Knapp burst onto the music scene with her debut folk-rock record Kansas. Becker, who was already an accomplished solo artist with about eight records and several No. 1 Christian radio hits, saw some of herself in the young rocker and offered Knapp her friendship and support. After Knapp returned from a seven-year hiatus in 2009, they reconnected.
Several months ago, they began tossing around ideas of how they might collaborate on a project. They shared a vision of producing something organic and true to their classic styles, and since each had been pressed by fans to put out a Christmas album, a recording of old familiar carols seemed the perfect fit.
For this record we wanted to do something simple -- put up a microphone and do what we would normally do just sitting around a campfire or living room. We didnt want to make it over pop so everyone would want to buy it, Knapp says. We wanted to apply our craft and skill to the hymns you would expect on Christmas Eve Mass every year.
While songs wont stray from the melodies, fans will see both artists stamps in the musical arrangements, which they created together. Every song is a duet featuring either Becker or Knapp on lead with the other filling in with harmonies.
Margaret takes lead on a really great jazz rendition of The First Noel. She really steps out on that. To me, that is so quintessential Margaret, Knapp says. Then I have a quintessential moment on a really simple arrangement of The Coventry Carol.
Becker also brings her gifts as an incredible guitar player, Knapp says. Becker, who has long admired Knapp as one of the best, most articulate modern song writers out there, hails her voice on these songs. Probably most people would say they love the hard-hitting part of her voice, but I personally love the more soft-spoken side, and she shows quite a bit of that on this record.
Above all, the pair hope to foster a strong sense of community among the audience at a time of year that is so much about family, friends and faith, but can also feel lonely.
I cant tell you how many times Ive gone out on Christmas tours and I myself walk away and feel so empty, Becker says. I hope people see the two of us having a great time, making great music and feel a part of it -- a part of that bond, that community.
