Cocktails at the Desmond
Cocktails in the Desmond Building Penthouse with the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles
Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018 4-7 PM
Sip a cocktail and watch the sun set over Miracle Mile from the rooftop of the 1929 Desmond Building (formerly known as the Wilshire Tower) with fellow members of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles. Complimentary cocktails and nibbles.
This special members only cocktail gathering will be held in The Desmond Building's rarely seen, circa 1931 intact Penthouse. Take one of the few remaining hand crank elevators in Los Angeles up to the penthouse, and scale the stairs to the roof for one of the best views of Miracle Mile and Los Angeles! This is a rare opportunity to attend a swanky penthouse soirée like those you see on TCM.
A special thank you to Brian Clark, the Desmond Building.
Cocktail attire (vintage or modern preferred) or business attire. If you plan to visit the rooftop, bring a light wrap.
$10 booking fee. Members may reserve up to two tickets. Membership will be verified. Please do not post this private event on social media.
Full details about free parking and entering the building will be sent after reservations are booked.
Streets will be closed for an event just east of The Desmond, on Wilshire Blvd. until 4pm. We suggest taking alternate streets to The Desmond from the east.
There are two flights of steep stairs to the roof, but the penthouse is fully accessible by elevator. The elevator is operated by an attendant, so upon arrival you can take in the original lobby, prior to going upstairs if you arrive and the elevator is on its way upstairs!
About the Desmond Building: The first Art Deco landmark tower built on the Miracle Mile was designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood, architect for the spectacular Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park, the North Rim lodge at the Grand Canyon, and the federal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles.
He crafted an eight-story Zigzag Moderne rectangle of offices that vaulted skyward from a wide Streamline Moderne base, a striking and optimistic structure that helped set the architectural standard for Wilshire Boulevard.
The lobby featured fourteen-karat gold ceiling detailing; the sidewalk display windows were trimmed in rich black and red granite. Doctors and dentists snapped up the upper floors, while downtown stores Desmond's and Silverwoods took the wings on the ground floors. (LA Conservancy website).
