Brandon De La Cruz and Nina Yates
This is an album release show to celebrate the release of Heat of the Valley, a new album comprised of artist Brandon De La Cruzs impressions of Joan Didions essays on California culture of the late 60s and early 70s. Subjects range from natural and psychological disasters brought on by the Santa Ana Winds to the nonchalant self preserving modes of shut-in Hollywood society to the complexities arising from returning home to a place thats only stability is its seemingly endless gradual descent toward oblivion. All winnowed through the artists own mesh of experiences from being raised in the suburbs east of Los Angeles.
Brandon De La Cruz was born in Whittier, CA and raised in the Inland Empire. His lyrics are uniquely shaped by his interest in RH Blyths translations of Japanese haiku. His approach to music is inspired by the improvised weekly performances that Jon Brion gave earlier in his career. His release Three Songs appeared on You Should Never Have Opened That Doors Best of 2014 list. In 2014 he relocated to Portland, OR. https://brandonthomasdelacruz.bandcamp.com
Nina Yates, longtime Portland singer-songwriter, brings you into her life with her songs. Tender and fierce with the gut and wisdom of a mother, the passion of a lover, the comfort of a sister and the broken heart of a daughter. Ninas voice and style of song-craft are evocative, heartfelt, and haunting.
