Hollywood Heritage and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Present: Scandal! The Trial of Mary Astor
The Evening @ the Barn series returns on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, when Hollywood Heritage and The Hollywood Foreign Press Association present a documentary about the blockbuster Hollywood trial - "Scandal: The Trial of Mary Astor". This is the first solo project of film scholar Alexa L. Foreman, and is a re-telling of the headline-making 1936 child custody trial of movie goddess Mary Astor and the fall-out from the release of her private diaries. A story of sex, jealousy and bold-face names that kept Depression-era America on the edge of its seat, it could just as easily play today.
"Scandal: The Trial of Mary Astor" represents two years of research, interviews and writing by Foreman, for more than 20 years head of research at Turner Classic Movies. The late TCM Host, Robert Osborne encouraged Foreman to use her vast knowledge and experience to tell her own stories. Scandal is dedicated to his memory.
Narrated by Oscar winner Lee Grant, "Scandal" features insights from film historians Molly Haskell and Leonard Maltin; David Wyler, son of famed director William Wyler, who was instrumental in Astor's long career; Los Angeles Times film critic Kevin Thomas; and Astor's daughter Marylyn, the subject of the custody battle that splashed her famous mother's private life across newspapers around the world. These interviews along with trial photographs and newspaper headlines capture a time in Hollywood history when the studios closely managed stars' images; when motion picture glamour offered an escape from the desperation of Depression-ravaged America; and when puritanical attitudes about sex could spell professional disaster for even the biggest Hollywood star.
Once again we will be offering refreshments for sale before the program and during intermission -- as well as our famous $1 raffle!
