Topic Description: Nationwide, utilities are grappling with aging infrastructure, and San Francisco is no exception. Portions of our combined sewer system are over 100 years old. Routine repairs are not sufficient to keep pace with our aging and seismically vulnerable infrastructure. It is crucial that we upgrade our system now to ensure we can continue to protect public health, the environment, and our local economy. The Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP) is a 20-year citywide investment to upgrade our aging sewer infrastructure to ensure a reliable, sustainable and seismically safe sewer system now and for generations to come. The SSIP is a combination of grey, green, and clean and is divided into three overlapping phases to maintain affordability. Phase 1 has been approved by our commission representing $2.9 billion. This presentation will discuss the first phase of SSIP which is comprised of 70 grey and green infrastructure projects across the city with an emphasis on the $2B being invested in the Southeast area of SF.
