Speaker:
Jignesh Desai, PE, BCEE, DBIA, PMP, LEED AP, PgMP, CEP

Topic Description:
Nationwide, utilities are grappling with aging infrastructure, and San Francisco is no exception. Portions of our combined sewer system are over 100 years old. Routine repairs are not sufficient to keep pace with our aging and seismically vulnerable infrastructure. It is crucial that we upgrade our system now to ensure we can continue to protect public health, the environment, and our local economy. The Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP) is a 20-year citywide investment to upgrade our aging sewer infrastructure to ensure a reliable, sustainable and seismically safe sewer system now and for generations to come. The SSIP is a combination of grey, green, and clean and is divided into three overlapping phases to maintain affordability. Phase 1 has been approved by our commission representing $2.9 billion. This presentation will discuss the first phase of SSIP which is comprised of 70 grey and green infrastructure projects across the city with an emphasis on the $2B being invested in the Southeast area of SF.

Speaker Biography:
Mr. Desai is a dedicated public servant with over 24 years of public and private experience as a professional engineer and project manager for large infrastructure projects for the San Francisco Airport (SFO) and San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). He has extensive experience in the planning, design, construction, and operation of: wastewater treatment processes, collection/distribution systems, and renewable energy/resource recovery projects.

Currently, Jignesh is the Senior Project Manager for ~$800 Million in Treatment Projects for the SFPUCs $6.9 Billion Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP). In this role, his passionate and proven leadership and coordination skills are on display as he leads a multidisciplinary team of City staff, consultants, and contractors, in delivering projects that are innovative, efficient and regulatory compliant for the City of San Francisco.

As a Director on the Certification Board of the Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) Jignesh provides guidance and active contributions to the Infrastructure industry in expanding knowledge of alternative delivery models.  When Jignesh is not managing projects for the City; he is an advocate for his community as a board member of three neighborhood associations; volunteers as a Bicycle Safety Instructor; and a HAM Radio enthusiast.
