Mountain Community Theater is proud to announce its wildly diverse 2019 season.
In March, we open with a bang with "Four Old Broads" by Leslie Kimbell. Retired burlesque queen Beatrice Shelton desperately needs a vacation, because things have not been very pleasant at Magnolia Place Assisted Living since Nurse Pat Jones began working there. On top of that, Sam Smith, retired Elvis impersonator, keeps trying to bed every woman in the building. A mystery unfolds with laughter as Beatrice and her conspirators try to outsmart the evil Nurse Jones and figure out why so many residents have been moved to the dark side, what exactly IS that mysterious pill, and what happened to Doctor Head? Season ticket holders will be able to make their reservations for their chosen date and seats beginning February 8, 2019.
In May, we turn to the thoughtful, funny, and touching "Rapture, Blister, Burn" by Gina, Gionfriddo, called "one of the top 10 plays of 2012" by Entertainment Weekly. After grad school, Catherine and Gwen chose polar opposite paths. Catherine built a career as a rockstar academic, while Gwen built a home with her husband and children. Decades later, unfulfilled in polar opposite ways, each woman covets the other's life, commencing a dangerous game of musical chairsthe prize being Gwen's husband. With searing insight and trademark wit, this Season ticket holders will be able to make their date and seat reservations for "Rapture, Blister, Burn" beginning April 5, 2019.
We will again be staging our New Works Weekend in August, featuring a staged reading of a new play by a local playwright. Season ticket holders will be able to make their date and seat reservations for New Works Weekend beginning July 12, 2019.
In September, it's time for musical fun with "Mamma Mia" by Catherine Johnson, featuring the music of ABBA. ABBA's hits tell the hilarious story of a young woman's search for her birth father. Sophie is ready to get married to her fiancée Sky, except for one thing - she has never met her father and wants him present for the big day. She invites three men that she discovers in her mothers diary and believes to be candidates, but when they all arrive, Sophies mother Donna becomes distressed. As Sophie, Sky, Donna, her friends, and the three potential fathers prepare for the big day, emotions run high and surprises abound. The show ran on Broadway for 14 years, and was made into an extremely successful film starring Meryl Streep. Season ticket holders will be able to make their date and seat reservations for "Mamma Mia" beginning August 16, 2019.
In a complete turnaround, we end the season in November with Anton Chekov's masterpiece, "The Cherry Orchard." Chekov's final play tells the story of an aristocratic Russian landowner who returns to her family estate just before it is auctioned to pay the mortgage, and her increasingly desperate attempts to save the property. The play's brilliance lies in its use of a critical historical moment - the aftermath of the abolition of serfdom in Russia - to explore and provide deep insights into families and relationships, all done with humor and intense drama. Season ticket holders will be able to make their date and seat reservations for "The Cherry Orchard" beginning October 18, 2019.
Season ticket sales end May 9th at 11:59 pm. Season ticket holders will be notified 5 weeks before each show opens that they can now make reservations.
