The Real Machiavelli by Monica Bauer
One part sex farce, one part Italian-style commedia, and one part commentary on politics, The Real Machiavelli is a play about the power of love and the love of power, written by award-winning playwright Monica Bauer. It is the year 1513 and Machiavelli author of the ultimate primer on dirty politics, The Prince has been exiled from his beloved Florence to his farm in the country. His much older wife, Marietta, fears he is so depressed he might kill himself, and arranges with her physician (and lover) to restore Machiavellis wits by summoning his favorite mistress, the young and gorgeous actress Francesca. Sex, mirth, and humorous plot twists abound, leading to a very surprise ending. The play was first performed at the 13th Street Repertory Theater in New York, directed by and starring off-off Broadway legend Cheryl King, who (Roadrunner is proud to announce) travels to Tucson to direct and recreate her starring role.
