String Summit: Bluegrass phenom mandolinist Ethan Setiawan/Genre-busting jazzy Fugue Mill featuring Sara Caswell/Liz & Dan Faiella
Raised on contradances, fiddle contests, and Irish sessions, Liz and Dan Faiella bring to life the traditional Irish and New England music of their roots with Lizs lyrical fiddle and vocals and Dans spirited low whistle and guitar.
This sibling folk duo has captivated audiences at premier folk venues, contradances, and festivals around New England. Liz and Dan have performed at Club Passim, the Boston Celtic Music Festival, the New England Folk Festival, the Acadia Trad Festival, Maine Celtic Celebration, and New Hampshires Seacoast Irish Festival.
Their concerts feature traditional Celtic and New England music, both instrumental settings and songs. Audience members are taken on a journey through the folk traditions of the duos Irish heritage and New Hampshire roots, from haunting ballads, to the lyrical compositions of Turlough OCarolan, to snappy and danceable jig and reel medleys, to mesmerizing fingerstyle guitar arrangements of slow airs.
Ethan Setiawan is a Boston-based mandolin player who has won such accolades as the National Mandolin Championship, the RockyGrass Mandolin Championship, and a full-ride scholarship to Berklee College of Music. His path has wended its way through traditional bluegrass to Bach partitas to free jazz, and his debut full-length album is made up of original tunes drawing from all these wells.
"Vibrant, thoughtful, and beautifully interactive"
Mark Shilansky and his group Fugue Mill weave jazz through the fabric of Bluegrass, Celtic, and Classical music, creating a complex yet attractive blend of musical styles and traditions. Original group pieces are featured side by side with music by such composers as Thelonious Monk, Leonard Cohen, and Samuel Barber. Violin and mandolin augment the lineup, creating a transparent and vibrant palette of improvisation and counterpoint. Members of the group combine their wide-ranging experience into a musical melange that explores diverse idioms, linked through improvisation and groove.
Mark Shilansky has been a stalwart of the Seacoast area since his tenure at University of New Hampshire as a student and then faculty member (and frequent accompanist to Drika Overton and friends tap dance performances). He has performed worldwide with such musical luminaries as Luciana Souza, the New York Voices, the jazz vocal group Syncopation, and has over 60 recording credits as pianist, vocalist, composer, and producer.
