Steve Clayton CSI Contributing Faculty Member NewSchool of Architecture+Design, Construction Management Program
PROGRAM NOTES:
Trent Collins and Steve Clayton have been on a mission for the last 8 years, sorting out the problems and finding a solution for the problems presented for micro-businesses and minority business enterprises (MBE) in being able to compete and grow their companies in today's construction industry. Even though most Agencies offer some sort of program to assist those Contractors, their efforts have fallen short of solving the problem and in numerous cases, have made it worse. In some cases, even bankrupting the very people they were trying to help.
Trent and Steve will outline the problem, show the efforts of some of those Agencies and how they failed, and offer their solutions to making a positive impact on MBEs and micro-businesses.
THEY WILL DISCUSS: Why do we even have MBE, DBE, WBE requirements in todays market? If those programs are supposed to help, do they? How/why not? How are those companies to survive the 45- to 60-day cycle for payment? They may be great tradesmen, but how do they stack up as businessmen?
THE SOLUTION Making the Contractors contract work to their financial advantage. Taking advantage of early payment discounts. Taking control of Contracting paperwork. Keeping working capital working.
