TISH HINOJOSA
"Simply put, Hinojosa is a first class songwriter" --Chicago Tribune
It has been a long time since Tish Hinojosa last played an Oaksong Music Society Concert - to be exact, it's been fourteen years. That time around (in 2004), Tish played in the friendly confines of Bernie's Guitar. This time she plays in the beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright Designed Pilgrim Church.
Tish Hinojosa is a singer/songwriter from Austin, TX. With seventeen CDs to her name, her distinct sound has gained her much critical acclaim. She is known for her borderless approach to music, blending Mexican folk and country music with a modern singer/songwriter sensibility and touches of pop. Tish has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe and continues to draw a loyal and growing audience.
Growing up in San Antonio, Tish is one of 13 children born to Mexican immigrant parents. She grew up listening to the traditional Mexican songs. In the late 1970's she discovered her love for heartfelt country music and began writing songs of her own. Inspired by Linda Ronstadt and Joan Baez, Hinojosa took up singing when she was in high school, and after working as a back-up vocalist for Michael Martin Murphy and a stint as a contract singer in Nashville, she settled in Austin where her eclectic blend of influences found an appreciative audience. Her 1989's Homeland and 1992's Culture Swing spread her reputation nationwide, as she impressed critics as well as music fans. Recording in both Spanish (1995's Frontejas) and English (2000's Sign of Truth), Hinojosa's clear, sweet vocals and compassionate songs pleased fans, but she performed and recorded less often after relocating to Germany in 2007. Hinojosa became active again after returning to the United States, releasing an album inspired by her experiences, West in 2018. "The album is definitely about renewal," she says. "Getting back on my feet, regaining my health, and creativity."
Hinojosa's multicultural and multistylistic blend of folk, country, Latino, and pop has an undeniable far reaching appeal, garnering her accolades such as a White House concert at the invitation of President and Mrs. Clinton and teaming up with artists such as Joan Baez, Booker T. Jones, Flaco Jimenez, Pete Seeger, and Dwight Yoakum. In 1992, she won the AIRD Indi Folk Album of the Year for her album Culture Swing. She has recorded an independent artist as well as for A&M, Warner Bros., and Rounder Records and has been featured artist on Austin City Limits, A Prairie Home Companion, and other NPR programs.
