Masterworks! ...with the Everett Philharmonic Orchestra

Join the Everett Philharmonic Orchestra for its Ninth Season Opener on October 14, 2018, from 3-5 pm at the Everett Civic Auditorium.

Season Openers are always exciting and this will be no exception.  Our concert opens with the tender but bittersweet Adagietto from Gustav Mahler's 5th Symphony, a moment of repose in that otherwise tumultuous composition. This beautiful slow movement is often played as a standalone work, and is one of Mahler's most popular pieces.

Violinist Svend Ronning will once again be featured on our stage in the performance of the Korngold Violin Concerto in D Major.
Viennese composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold managed to get out of Austria just ahead of Hitler's Anschluss. He immigrated to Hollywood, where he used his talents writing movie scores for MGM in a successful career that included two Oscars. When the war was over, Korngold tried to return to writing serious concert music, but unfortunately, the guardians of High Art at the time scorned anything bearing the taint of Hollywood. These days, Korngold's art music is experiencing a renaissance. Judge for yourself whether his 1947 Violin Concerto has the right stuff or is just gone with the wind.

Beethoven's Fifth Symphony is one of the most familiar pieces in all classical music, and a bit of listener fatigue might be expected.  Yet, when hearing the Symphony live, nothing of the sort happens; the work sweeps you along as if you're experiencing it for the first time. Enjoy the dynamic working out of the four-note theme in the first movement, the contrasting serene and outgoing moods of the slow movement, the mysterious scherzo, and the triumphant finale. Come renew your acquaintance with a masterpiece!

Before the performance, at 2:00 pm, Dr. Paul-Elliott Cobbs will share his insights and anecdotes at the informal and informative Stage Side Chat.  Our wonderful soloist may even make an appearance for some of his own comments.
(You will also be able to get your first choice of seating for the concert!)

Box Office will open at 1:45 pm to facilitate purchasing tickets at the door.
