2013 Rhythmic Cypher Slam Team Fundraiser
Rhythmic Cypher is a poetry and music showcase and open mic which happens every sunday night in Portland ME. This year, we have become registered as an NPS recognized poetry venue, allowing us to send a team to compete in the National Poetry Slam, The Individual World Poet Slam, and the Women of The World Poetry Slam! To achieve this, RC is raising funds to send poets to Boston to the National Poetry Slam Competition. Performing at this event are several amazing artists, including Dominique Ashaheed, and Marty Mcconnell.

"Multi-faceted" hardly describes the celebrated talent of 2012 Women of The World Slam Champ Dominique, but it's a word that will have to do. In 1996 the volleyball star, after making the 1996 United States Olympic Volleyball team, suffered an injury during the opening ceremony match of the Olympic games but still took center stage as a featured vocalist for those opening ceremonies.Toting double Masters degrees in English Lit and Education, Dominique has worked as an educator, cultural media director, children's advocate, and non-profit program director (currently for Peace Jam).As a poet and jazz/R&B vocalist, she has shared stages with artists like Joe Bonner, the Flobots, Dead Prez, Saul Williams, Liza Garza, and Staceyann Chin.

Marty Mcconnell is the 2012 National Underground Poetry Individual Competition Slam champion, and is the author of wine for a shotgun, released in October 2012 on EM Press. Part of the vanguard of poets fusing and refusing the delineations between literary and oral poetry, McConnell's work blurs the lines between autobiography and personae to comment on and illuminate what it means to live and love outside the lines in early 21st century America. Her work has been published in numerous anthologies, and read on stage as a part of seven slam teams representing New York and Chicago. She is a two-time recipient of the Community Arts Assistance Program grant from the City of Chicago's Office of Tourism and Culture, and received a 2013 grant from the Illinois Arts Council. Marty has also toured both nationally and internationally, ranging from performances as a one-woman play named "vicebox" to Morrigan, an all-female performance poetry troupe she co-founded. She received her MFA in creative writing/poetry from Sarah Lawrence College, and for nearly a decade, co-curated the flagship reading series of the New York City-based louderARTS Project. She appeared on both the second and fifth seasons of HBO's Def Poetry Jam. She returned to Chicago in 2009 to co-found Vox Ferus, an organization dedicated to empowering and energizing individuals and communities through the written and spoken word.

Speaker For The Dead is a national queer and allied folk brass and poetry ensemble, with members ranging from all over the US but originating in Worcester, MA. They have spent the last 3 years touring the country performing and creating safe spaces for which artists can express themselves through any medium they choose. This often includes open mics in art galleries and schools, but has since spread to punk shows, bars, DIY spaces, cafes, and restaurants all over the country. The project is open source and collaborative, allowing anyone to join regardless of background, gender expression, sexual orientation, or ability.
