Jesca Prudencio: NOHING (presented by The Performance Project @ University Settlement)
Walking down the street, sitting on the train, waiting in line, etc. public space is a platform for sexual harassment. International director, choreographer, and documentary theater maker Jesca Prudencio explores the layered experience of the victim around the moment of attack.
Developed through a series of workshops and interviews, NOHING is a documentary dance theater work that shares the unsettling experiences of women from the University Settlement community in New York City. Jesca and her company, People of Interest, perform the victims' physical struggles to simultaneously protect, fight, and scream silently like the strong, yet still, Noh spirits. NOHING merges testimony, multimedia, and traditional Japanese Noh dance to explore the mask that women wear to survive harassment.
Directed and choreographed by University Settlement Artist-in-Residence, Jesca Prudencio. Created with People of Interest Theater Company.
The Performance Project @ University Settlement answers the call to mentor, encourage, and diversify our art makers, leaders, educators and students. University Settlement is a 130 year-old cultural kitchen that is deeply rooted in our community, and the arts are represented across our entire body of work. Our creative community development approach fosters a sense of belonging, reciprocity and possibility for creative leaders from all walks of life at every stage in their development. Through our series of cutting-edge theater, music, dance and performance art events presented in a welcoming environment at little to no cost, we aim to break down barriers and build community among the diverse groups that call the Lower East Side their home.
