Putting on the Ritz with The Girl Who Was Too Beautiful For Hollywood: Barbara La Marr at the Shakespeare Club
PARTY LIKE ITS 1920!
Welcome all flappers, sheiks, gangsters, and molls! Join us at the swanky Shakespeare Speakeasy on Friday, October 19, 6:00 pm for hotsy-totsy jazz, swell hooch, and hobnobbing with Hollywoods alluring screen siren, Barbara La Marr (the girl who was too beautiful for Hollywood). Rumor has it that Miss La Marr will spill the goods on her flamboyant hijinks! The multi-faceted cocktail party and program features actress and author Sherri Snyder as Barbara La Marr and live music by the John Reynolds Trio. (Reynolds is the grandson of actress ZaSu Pitts who was Miss La Marrs close friend). Copies of Snyders new biography, Barbara La Marr: The Girl Who Was Too Beautiful for Hollywood (University Press of Kentucky, 2017), will be available for purchase.
Barbara La Marr (1896-1926) was an actress and screenwriter who appeared in 26 credited films during her career between 1920 and 1926. She was also noted by the media for her beauty and her tumultuous personal life. She partied and drank heavily, claimed to sleep only two hours a night, and ruined her health with a series of crash diets that led to her death from pulmonary tuberculosis and nephritis at the age of 29.
Tickets (include party, program, and appetizers; cash bar) are $20 for Pasadena Museum of History & Shakespeare Club Members; $25 for Regular Guys & Gals. Put on your glad rags and join the fun; Period Dress is encouraged.
