Kobie Watkins Grouptet album release concert @ the Durham Fruit Co.
Jazz drummer, world-renowned performer and Origin Records artist Kobie Watkins released his sophomore album, Movement, with the Kobie Watkins Grouptet on June 15, 2018. Recorded at Brigham Young University, Movement features Kobie Watkins (Leader, Composer, Percussion, Drums), Justin Nielsen (Piano), Aaron Miller (Bass), Ryan Nielsen (Trumpet) and Jonathan Armstrong (Saxophone). The album was recorded and mixed by Jason Richmond.
Watkins, a Chicago native, has toured and recorded as a drummer with a number of noteworthy musicians such as Sonny Rollins, Bobby Broom, Kurt Elling, Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano, and Ryan Cohen. A graduate of Vandercook College of Music, Watkins also travels nationwide as an educator where he shares his wisdom with motivated young musicians. An innovative instructor who constantly seeks new ways to challenge his students, Watkins recently released his first instructional book A Drum Book, which illustrates key drum exercises and strategies created for beginning to advanced drummers. Watkins and the Grouptet formed organically over many years of friendship, performances and educational experiences around the world. Watkins and members of the band say they are on a quest to infect music lovers spiritually, creatively and emotionally.
This album release concert will have music from a Youth Jazz Combo and the Grouptet will play some preview music with a chamber Orchestra from the up-coming performance and recording "Movement with Strings" February 2019.
