Lisa Geduldig and El Rio Present... Comedy Returns to El Rio!
Comedy Returns to El Rio! is a popular monthly comedy show, now in its 11th year, that recently won Best Comedy Night by The Bay Area Reporter. The show, co-produced by Kung Pao Kosher Comedy's Lisa Geduldig, takes place at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District and showcases an eclectic, mix of intelligent, progressively-minded comedians from the Bay Area and beyond. Geduldig created the event in 2008 order to bring back to life a comedy show that used to take place in the 1980s and 1990s at El Rio.
Please note: As of August, the show now takes place on the every 3rd Friday, rather than Thursday, of the month.
The Friday September 21st show features Milt Abel, Richard Sarvate, Yvette Fernandez, Ayelet Schrek, and Lisa Geduldig.
Milt Abel is a stand-up comedian with over 35 years of experience. Starting in the heyday of the San Francisco comedy scene of the 1980's, Milt went on to headline comedy clubs throughout North America and cruise ships throughout the world. Besides numerous TV appearances (An Evening At The Improv and comedy specials for PBS and Showtime) and having written for Dennis Millers TV show, Milt's stand up performances are heard regularly on SiriusXM comedy channels. He also an accomplished author, publishing a collection of humorous short stories about cruise ship life "Stories from the Delux" and a novel "The Deductions. www.miltabel.com
Richard Sarvate is a San Francisco based comedian with an alternative sense of humor. He is Indian, though his last name was butchered during an immigration debacle. Richard is a programmer by day and also a programmer by night. But he also finds time to talk about weird stuff on stages. His act consists of quirky observations, impressions, and surreal one-man sketches. His jokes range from silly imaginings about a taqueria that serves fortune churros to deep and introspective subjects like his mothers schizophrenia. He has opened for Roseanne Barr, performed at the prestigious SF Sketchfest, and a couple of years ago did a 19-show comedy tour of India. www.rsarvate.com
Yvette Fernandez: The career trajectory of the television reporter doesn't usually start with Investigative Reporting and end with telling d*&% jokes! But Yvette Fernandez has never been traditional, and she couldn't be more proud. Turns out standing behind a microphone in a basement making people laugh is just as exciting as standing behind a microphone in a hurricane! Yvette is a smart, quick-tongued "citizen of the world" whose comedy reflects a journalist's wordsmith abilities. Her insightful wit examines everything from race relations to life as a cougar (or, una leona). It is only a matter of time before we see her on television again--Whether it's on Comedy Central or America's Most Wanted remains to be seen. Yvette is based in The Bay Area but performs all over California and the Western US. She is the Creator and Producer of The Colorful Comedy Series, a showcase focusing on the funny side of diversity.
Ayelet Schrek is a theater artist and educator who has been driven to comedy by a cruel, random world and a sense of inexorable doom. She can often be found roaming the streets of her hometown San Francisco practicing her stand up set when she thinks people aren't looking. Ayelet's comedy has received much acclaim from the bedroom mirror and the people who support her no matter what. If you know someone who needs an English tutor or an acting coach, she's available. She is making her stand up comedy debut tonight.
Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer whos the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™ (which celebrated its 25th Anniversary last December), Comedy Returns to El Rio, and the new monthly comedy show, Comedy at Ashkenaz! on the second Thursday of the month at Ashkenaz in Berkeley. Lisa moonlights as a publicist.
