Tribute to Joni Mitchell with Susie Burke, David Surette, and Kent Allyn
Join Seacoast favorites Susie Burke, David Surette and Kent Allyn as they pay tribute to Joni Mitchell, a musician who has been called one of the most beautiful and enigmatic artists of a beautiful and enigmatic period of American life. A songwriter of remarkable depth and beauty, and a major influence on guitarists, Mitchell is a writer of songs sweet and tough, full of both sweetness and rebellion. Susie, Kent and David will be doing a set of their usual repertoire of original, traditional and contemporary songs, and a full set of songs by Joni Mitchell, one of Susies strongest early influences, and an artist all three of them love and respect. Susie and Davids last show at the Dance Hall with their daughters sold out, so get your tickets early! Warmth, vitality, and spontaneity mark the performances of Susie Burke & David Surette, and have earned them a reputation as one of the finest acts on the lively New England folk scene. Susies beautiful, complex voice and Davids graceful, nimble-fingered string playing combine with extraordinary results on their own blend of contemporary, traditional, and original folk and acoustic music. Together since 1988, Susie and David have built a loyal following for their music, through a steady series of concerts and well-received recordings. Their most recent duo recording, Waiting For The Sun, was released in the fall of 2015, and they are planning a new 2018 release to celebrate 30 years of performing together. Burke and Surette have been an essential part of the New England folk music community for years. They have collaborated with many of the regions top musicians, and performed in all sorts of settings, including concerts, clubs, coffeehouses, festivals, fairs, churches, and schools. They are both instrumental and vocal teachers, and have taught regularly over the years as part of their musical world, both in private lessons, group classes, and in many music weekends and summer music camps. David is head of the Concord Community Music Schools folk programming, and is also artistic director of their March Mandolin Festival. They have also raised two lovely and very musical daughters, with whom they make rare and eagerly-anticipated appearances as the Burke/Surette Family Band; their eldest, Isa, is a part of the Boston-based trio Lula Wiles, while their youngest, Julianna, is co-director of her Bowdoin College a capella group, Miscellania.
Kent Allyn is an accompanist and studio musician, as well as a key sideman for several groups and songwriters including Ben Baldwin & the Big Note (since 1976), Susie Burke & David Surette, Cosy Sheridan, Harvey Reid and Joyce Andersen, Cormac McCarthy and Julie Snow. His bass, piano, and electric guitar work have been heard on recordings of the above musicians and others. At Berwick Academy since 1989, he teaches private lessons on guitar, piano and electric bass. When not involved in playing or teaching music he can be found in a recreational rowing shell or sailing a peapod on Pepperrell Cove in Kittery Point, ME. He says his only claim to fame is having had piano lessons with Steven Tylers grandmother, Constance Mrs. T. Tallarico.
