Raptured: The Disappearance and Discovery of Aimee Semple McPherson
"Raptured: the Disappearance and Discovery of Aimee Semple McPherson" by Neva Hutchinson, with Anthony Clarvoe, dramaturge.

Opens Friday, October 26th, 2018 at the Phoenix Theatre, 414 Mason Street, SF, CA 94102.

It runs Thursday-Saturday with one Sunday matinee on the 28th. It closes November 3rd.

This production is being presented under the auspices of Actors Equity Association MPC.

Raptured is a new play about entertainment evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson by Neva Hutchinson. Sister Aimee led a hardscrabble life before becoming a celebrity. She grew up in Canada, married fellow evangelist Robert Semple, and was a missionary in China.

After his death, she re-married at a young age to Harold "Mack" McPherson. Feeling "the call", she left him and toured cross-country with her mother and two children, using a tent as the church building. She drove a car that had Jesus is Coming Soon - Get Ready painted tastefully on the sides.

She founded and built the 4 Square Temple Church that stands today in L.A. She helped to provide food for people during the Depression.

She created spectacles with her 5:00 Sunday radio show. Live wild animals would be brought out to the stage, providing realism for her "Daniel and the Lion's Den" story. She reached thousands of people with her preaching on the radio, and then she disappeared.

Raptured is about the disappearance and discovery of Aimee Semple McPherson in May of 1926. She was gone for six weeks, and claimed she had been kidnapped. A ransom was asked for and gathered. Some of her public believed that she was not kidnapped, but with her married lover, Kenneth Ormiston in a bungalow by the sea.

She was called up to a Grand Jury trial on charges of loose morals.

"Raptured: the Disappearance and Discovery of Aimee Semple McPherson" is based on facts and augmented by the author's imagination.
