Spiritual intelligence is the ability to behave with wisdom and compassion while maintaining inner and outer peace regardless of the situation. Proponents of spiritual intelligence claim that it is the logical, next step from emotional intelligence, that it is an integrating intelligence it links and amplifies our rational and emotional capacities and that it gives meaning to life.
Traditionally weve thought of intelligence only as a demonstration of competency in linguistic and logical mathematical concepts, such as would be tested for in college board exams and IQ tests.
In the 1980's Howard Gardner, Harvard psychologist, introduced the concept of multiple intelligences, which, he claimed, is a broader definition of intelligence that more accurately reflects the differing ways in which humans think and learn.
In the 1990's, Daniel Goleman posited an additional intelligence, emotional intelligence, which is defined as the ability to process emotional information and use it to navigate the social environment.
In the twenty-first century, building on the concept of emotional intelligence, spiritual intelligence is the latest addition to multiple intelligence theory. In this class you will learn what spiritual intelligence is and how it might be applied to help you in your life.
Brian Walker is a Unity minister with a masters degree in education. He has a special interest in the relationship of science and spirituality. He is a certified coach in SQ21, a spiritual intelligence self-assessment inventory that has been validated scientifically and has been used successfully in corporate settings.
