This is a tour of the Piedras Blancas Light Station in San Simeon. The tour will be led by a docent. There is about mile of easy walking along the trail. Attendees will enter the lighthouse, but for safety reasons will not be permitted to go upstairs.
The Piedras Blancas Lighthouse tower was built in the 1870's and is still in operation today. The lighthouse underwent major restoration beginning in 2010 to help bring it back to its original glory. This restoration work continues today.
The Piedras Blancas Light Station provides a glimpse into the period in our nation's past when lighthouses served a vital role in maritime navigation. Today the light station is managed as a historic park and wildlife sanctuary. The light station is part of the federally designated Piedras Blancas Light Station Outstanding Natural Area and the California Coastal National Monument. The tower and some support buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
