Event
Jenny Maybee & Ray Larsen
BIMA is excited to welcome two of Bloedel Reserve's Creative Residents for an evening of music.
JENNY MAYBEE Jenny Maybee is a nationally-charting pianist, vocalist, and composer who make(s) beautiful music expressing the sheer joy of being alive. Her vocals have been described as in the same league with Billie Holiday, and her piano style has been compared to Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, and Cecil Taylor. Jennys compositions and performance draw inspiration from time spent exploring and absorbing the resonance of various natural landscapes, her studies of the martial and healing arts, and the vast sonic landscape of jazz and world music. Her latest album, HAIKU, was lauded in the press as a thrilling, intimate, very delicate dialogueclose to perfection, and her composition Winter Butterflies was selected as one of the Top 10 New Jazz Songs of 2016.
RAY LARSEN Earshot Jazz has called him an expansive innovator, and The Seattle Times describes his music as life-enhancing. A powerful and versatile player, Ray is best known for his work with Chemical Clock (winners of the 2014 Earshot Jazz Album of the Year), Tyrant Lizard, and The Sky Is A Suitcase. He is also a member of the historic Harry James Orchestra, the Casey MacGill Orchestra, Hotels, and Wayne Horvits' Electric Circus. He has worked with Michael Shrieve (Santana), Jamie Cullum, Heatwarmer, Beat Connection, Pickwick, Birch Periera, and The Dip. Former bands and projects include Michael Shrieve's Spellbinder, Dyno Jamz, Gregg Belisle-Chi's I Sang To You And The Moon, The Fabulous Party Boys, and the Jacob Zimmerman Quintet. As a composer, Raymond recently completed his cinematic album trilogy, Modern Achievements, which pays tribute to three entries from a 1903 encyclopedia by the same name. With 26 musicians participating across the three works, the music offers a brilliant collection of Seattles great improvisers. He also writes instrumental songs for his trio Tyrant Lizard, with Carmen Rothwell and Gregg Belisle-Chi. Ray holds bachelors degrees from the University of Washington in music and conservation biology, and a masters degree in Jazz Studies & Improvised Music. During his time there, he studied with Allen Vizzutti, Cuong Vu, Ted Poor, Greg Sinibaldi, Huck Hodge and Fred Radke, and co-founded the Improvised Music Project and its annual music festival, IMPfest. Raymond is also an active educator. He runs a private studio and works as a freelance instructor for Seattle JazzED, the Meridian School, the Mercer Island School District, and Roosevelt High School. He was awarded the 2015 Earshot Golden Ear Award for "Emerging Artist of the Year".
This concert is part of the Within/Earshot Jazz Festival presented by BIMA in partnership with the Earshot Jazz Festival.
