More about the concert: The Rainier Symphony is thrilled to close out its 2018-19 season with guest artist Katie Travis, Broadway star extraordinaire. Katie recently finished her run of over 700 shows in the touring production of Phantom of the Opera, in the leading role of Christine DaaƩ. No longer on tour, Katie comes to the Pacific Northwest from her home in New York to join the Rainier Symphony on a concert that features some of her favorite Broadway hits, including works from West Side Story, Carousel, and Phantom of the Opera. In addition to these Broadway show stoppers, Katie will join the orchestra in a work that is a change of style, but a beautiful song in its own right: Samuel Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915. This piece captures the nostalgia and reflection felt by all of us as we move from adolescence, to young adulthood, to our "golden years". The subtle harmonies and textures composed by Barber offer a beautiful blanket of sound for the vocalist to wrap around her shoulders as she shares memories of days gone by. Closing out our season will be Leonard Bernstein's most well-known work, Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. This musical served as a modern-day retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, but changes the setting to the streets of New York in the mid 1950's. The influence of jazz, folk, and Latin music is infectious to musicians and audiences alike, and captures the spirit of the colliding cultures represented in this tragic love story. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, programs and artists may change without notice.
