Haydn, Wagner, and Massa
Our fist concert of the season will include masterpieces by Haydn and Wagner as well as a world Premier by Pittsburgh composer Chris Massa.
The performance features Haydn's Symphony 83 "The Hen" and Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll" both of which are incredible treasures not often performed in Pittsburgh.
Chris Massa's Symphony No. 1 "Apologia" will be heard for the first time! In the composer's own words: I've decided to call this new piece a symphony, not just because of the scope, but because I'm working with one of the most common symphonic themes, the crisis of faith. Subtitled "Apologia," it aims to be both an apology in the traditional sense an expression of regret and remorse, and an admission of failings and in the more legal or theological sense a defense of a position or idea. As is frequently the case with my music, it is stylistically eclectic, and while some musical influences may be fairly obvious comparisons to Ives are inevitable, and not unintentional others will hopefully be more subtle more than a little Brahms and Vaughan Williams have been thrown in for good measure, and it remains to be seen how my current obsessions with Monteverdi and bluegrass will show themselves.
