Symposium - Migrant Letters: The Chinese and Mexican Experience
Explore the letters of Mexican and Chinese migrants and their stories in California's history in this one-day symposium co-sponsored by the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West and The Huntington.
Moderated sessions, discussions, and observations by curators and historians provide insight as to why these valuable letters have received little notice, and how scholarly use and collecting is challenging this perception. Topics for discussion include historian José Orozco's declaration that migrant letters are "the quieter affirmations of humanity, those simple exchanges...expressions of love...scribbled in ink that fades, written on paper that yellows."
